Two Teens Killed in North Lawndale Shooting During Dice Game Identified

NORTH LAWNDALE — A shooting in North Lawndale Sunday night left a 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy dead, police said.

Around 9:45 p.m., the two were playing dice in the 1800 block of South Springfield Avenue when two men walked up and shot at them, according to Officer Antoinette Ursetti, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The 19-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, Ursetti said. He was identified as Jerome Phelps, 19, of the 1800 block of South Ridgeway Avenue.

The 16-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was in critical condition with a gunshot wound in his head, Ursetti said. The teen was pronounced dead at 4:08 p.m. Monday at Mount Sinai, according to the Medical Examiner's records. He was identified as Caprice McCollum Jr. of the 1800 block of South Avers Avenue, according to Cook County Medical Examiner's records.

Police said the 19-year-old was a documented gang member.

No one is in custody, Ursetti said.
