CHICAGO — Police shot and wounded a man they say tried to run them over with a stolen car Saturday night.

At 7:48 p.m., police tried to stop a man driving a stolen car in the 7800 block of South Martin Luther King Drive in Grand Crossing, according to a Chicago Police news release.

The man reversed into another car and then drove at the officers, who were boxed in by the man and traffic stopped at a red light. Officers feared for their safety, according to police.

An officer shot twice at the car, hitting the driver, who was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, according to police. The passenger of the car also was arrested and was found to have a loaded gun in his waistband, according to police.

Police and the passenger were not injured, according to police, and the incident is under investigation.
