UPTOWN — With the first day of class just weeks away, community groups around the neighborhood are seeking donations to ensure Uptown's schools and students have what they need.

Uplift Community High School, 900 W. Wilson St., is seeking office furniture donations. Though they didn't have specific needs, they encouraged anyone trying to get rid of office furniture to instead donate it to the high school, said Friends of the 46th Ward Schools.

Earlier this week, the group began a school supply drive for students at Courtenay Language Arts Center, Brenneman Elementary School, Walt Disney Magnet School, Greeley Elementary School, McCutcheon Elementary School and Uplift Community High School.

The 47th Ward is collecting school supplies at 4243 N. Lincoln Ave. until Aug. 22 that will be distributed to needy families in partnership with Common Pantry, Lincoln Square Friendship Center and Ravenswood Community Services.

Friday is the last day to donate to the Sponsor-A-Student Backpack Drive. Donors can sign up here to sponsor a student, who will then receive a bag full of supplies. Individual donations will also be accepted.

Donations can be dropped off at the offices of State Sen. Heather Steans, State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, Ald. Harry Osterman, at 5533 N. Broadway.
