BRONZEVILLE — Looking for free school supplies?

Local politicians and a prominent church are both holding back-to-school events Aug. 15.

The Expo and Back-to-School Fair at Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church, 600 E. 35th St., will play host to representatives from high schools and colleges and also a youth concert.

Book bags and other school supplies will be given away, and a public forum will be conducted on the topic "Learning That ALL Lives Matter."

According to church administrator Marilyn White, Sixth Grace has held it the last several years, usually with "over a hundred" people attending. It's valuable for local kids in need of fresh school supplies for the return to class, she said.

The expo is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Not far away, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Ald. Will Burns (4th) and state Rep. Christian Mitchell (D-Chicago) will play host to the 24th annual 4th Ward Health & Housing Fair at King High School, 4445 S. Drexel Ave.

Kids needing a back-to-school physical can get one if they bring their required forms, with backpacks going to those who complete the exam as long as supplies last. Free haircuts for kids also will be available.

Otherwise, the fair will focus on general health issues, including blood pressure, vision, dental and hearing screenings, as well as state ID and driver's license renewals.

The Genesis Housing Development Corp. will conduct a session on training and education for new homeowners from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The city Department of Planning and Development holds an hourlong session on tenant rights starting at 11:30 a.m. Seaway Bank holds an hourlong seminar for prospective home buyers at 1:30 p.m.

Both events are free and open to the public.

The first day of class for Chicago Public Schools is Sept. 8.
