STREETERVILLE — A new video game tournament will let kids check out their "Minecraft" creations on the big screen starting Tuesday.

Santa Monica, Calif.-based Super League Gaming, which will host a new gaming league in movie theaters nationwide this fall, will bring its introductory "summer tour" to the AMC River East 21 theater, 322 E. Illinois St., on Tuesday.

There, gamers ages 7 to 14 will square off during a 100-minute "Minecraft" session from 4 to 5:40 p.m. Admission will be $20 with bragging rights on the line. Parents get in free with their gamers.

"Bringing a game like Minecraft to movie theaters is a natural way to turn a traditional solitary activity into something social and enriching," Super League President and COO Brett Morris said in a statement.

The event will precede a new, six-week video game league starting Sept. 15 at the Streeterville theater and other cinemas throughout the country. A Super League Gaming spokeswoman said age limits and games to be played in the league have yet to be determined. League tickets are $120 each.

Released in 2009, Minecraft is a popular building game that has sold more than 20 million PC/Mac copies. Gamers on Tuesday will bring their laptops to play the traditional first-person view, with a third-person view including all players projected onto the movie screen. Players will alternate between "creative" and "survival" rounds and see their totals recorded on a nationwide leaderboard.

"At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things," the Minecraft website reads. "It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty."
