CHICAGO — A 17-year-old boy died after being shot in his back Friday evening in North Lawndale, police said.

At about 6:45 p.m. Friday, the boy was standing on the 1200 block of South Kolin Avenue when a black minivan pulled up and someone fired a shot out its door, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

Medical examiners identified the boy as Donnel Morrison, of the 1300 block of South Kostner Avenue.

Andrew Holmes, who works for Chicago Survivors who lives in the neighborhood, said he talked to the Morrison family and other witnesses Saturday morning. Holmes said that after the shooting, Donnel and his friends ran into the house before discovering that he'd been injured and calling for help.

Donnel was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Estrada said.

"Everyone who's lost a family member is experiencing the same thing [as the Morrison family], and around here, it's been getting tougher and tougher," said Holmes, who offers counseling and resources to families of murder victims. "All you can really do is stay around, and tell them you'll be there for them."

No one is in custody for the murder, Estrada said.

Holmes encouraged anyone with information on the murder to call Chicago Survivors' tip hotline at 1-800-UTELLUS (1-800-883-5587).
