BRIDGEPORT — The Chicago Park District will break ground on the neighborhood’s long-awaited boathouse in early August, according to supporters close to the project.
Chicago Park District officials were not immediately available for comment Thursday.
The city first announced plans to build the 19,000-square-foot, Jeanne Gang-designed boathouse at Park 571 – located along Eleanor Street in Bridgeport – back in November.
After Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced plans to bring boathouses to the Chicago River in a bid to expand recreation on the waterway, the $5.7 million Bridgeport facility was the last in line.
Three other boathouses have already been built in Clark Park, River Park and Chinatown.
The Bridgeport boathouse is expected to open to the public in summer 2016.
