NORTH LAWNDALE — A man is dead and another is hurt after a shooting Saturday morning in North Lawndale, police said. It was the first of two shootings on the same block within minutes of each other.

A 25-year-old man was standing on the 3500 block of West Grenshaw Street at about 1 a.m. when a van pulled up and fired shots, according to Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, Pacheco said.

The man was identified as Chazelle Hayes, of the 3400 block of West Madison Street in East Garfield Park, through medical examiner documents.

Officers later learned that an 18-year-old man had been brought to Mount Sinai with a graze wound in his back, who said he was shot at the same time and place, Pacheco said.

The 18-year-old is now in stable condition, Pacheco said.

Police said the 25-year-old man is a documented gang member.

On the same block five minutes later, in what police said was an unrelated incident, officers fired at and arrested a man who they believe had been firing a gun.

Around 1:05 a.m., on the 1100 block of South St. Louis Avenue, people flagged down 11th district police officers and told them a man with a gun had fled east on Grenshaw Street, Pacheco said.

Police chased the man on foot, during which time Pacheco said he aimed a gun at officers. An officer then pulled out his gun and shot at the man, but no one was hurt, Pacheco said.

Police took the man into custody on the 3500 block of West Grenshaw Street and recovered his gun, Pacheco said.

Charges on the man are pending, Pacheo said, and an investigation is ongoing.
