HYDE PARK — St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church will celebrate Mandela Day with the South African ambassador to the United States.

Ambassador Mninwa Mahlangu will join the congregation for an interfaith service at 6:30 p.m. at the church at 6105 S. Michigan Ave. to honor the former South African leader on Nelson Mandela International Day.

During his trip to Chicago, Mahlangu is asking Chicagoans to devote 67 minutes to helping others in recognition of the 67 years Mandela spent as an activist and humanitarian.

“Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary compassion after 27 years in prison showed that human rights and equality are stronger than discrimination and hate,” said Rev. Richard Tolliver of St. Edmund’s in an announcement of Mahlangu’s visit.

“Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact and end social injustices," he said.
