CHICAGO — A woman pushed and threatened another woman in a South Loop Jewel parking lot over a driving incident, according to the victim and police.

Trevor Persephanie, 44, of Woodlawn, said she was driving on South Wabash Avenue at about 9 a.m. Monday and moved into a turn-in lane to Jewel, 1224 S. Wabash Ave., several feet early. Another car cut in front of Persephanie's, she said, and stopped. Persephanie turned into the lot through another entrance while the driver went through the first entrance and then drove close to Persephanie's car, she said.

Persephanie got out of her car, at which point the other driver, a woman, got out of her car and "charge[d] and pushe[d]" her, Persephanie said.

Persephanie said she stepped back, afraid to use force to defend herself because she is black and the other woman is white: "What I say doesn't matter. It wouldn't be a defense," Persephanie said.

Security guards came and "grabbed" the woman, Persephanie said. The woman said she had just dropped her kids off and Persephanie could have killed her, Persephanie said.

Persephanie said she asked the woman why she would push her and the woman said, "You know where you are at? This is my neighborhood. This is my neighborhood."

Police were notified of the incident, and Persephanie said it took them an hour to respond. The woman left but was later arrested at her home, police said.

Police said Elaine Canevaro, 44, of The Loop, was charged with one count of battery and one count of simple assault in the incident.
