CHICAGO — The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Chicago, meaning that "conditions are favorable" for the development of tornadoes, according to the notice. The watch is in effect until 11 p.m. Monday night.
"Over the next few hours we could see damaging winds, large hail, flash flooding, and some possible tornadoes in the area," said meteorologist Amy Seeley.
While she didn't suggest that anyone change their plans to avoid the weather, Seeley said people driving in the area need to "have access to the latest information" in case the watch turns into a warning.
"People need to keep an eye to the sky and check in for current conditions, so they can know where to go if things get worse," Seeley said.
Chicago has had a particularly rainy summer, with last month setting records as the wettest June recorded in Illinois history following 8 inches of rain, and the 11th rainiest June in Chicago history.
