EDGEWATER — A 21-year-old man was shot dead at an Edgewater car wash Thursday afternoon, according to police.

The man was shot in his back around 4:44 p.m. on the 5900 block of North Ridge Avenue, according to Officer Stacey Cooper, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital and pronounced dead, she said.

He was later identified as Devone Matthews, of the 6100 block of North Damen Avenue in West Rogers Park, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m.

The recently built car wash sits at a busy intersection used by Lake Shore Drive commuters headed to the Far North Side and the north suburbs. Drivers slowed during Thursday's evening rush to see what was going on.

Crime scene tape blocked off the entrances to Snappy Car Wash, 5961 N. Ridge Ave., and about seven to 10 police officers were questioning witnesses after the fatal shooting.

Tape also blocked off a small office or waiting room area at the car wash around 5:30 p.m.
