UKRAINIAN VILLAGE — A mature and towering parkway ash tree that neighbors say was already rotting split in half on Monday and appears to have damaged a Honda Fit parked along a quiet street in Ukrainian Village.

Jeremy Quinn, a photographer, said he was walking his dog in the 2200 block of West Cortez Street about 30 minutes after the crash on Monday.

"The Honda Fit didn't looked crushed, but I'm sure there was some damage. You could only see half of the Fit under there," Quinn said.

Another car parked within a few feet of the tree was not impacted by the crash.

The tree had a Wednesday street cleaning warning sign tied around its trunk at the time of the fall.

Neighbors on the Ukrainian Village Neighborhood Watch Facebook Page, where Quinn shared his photographs, said the tree had shown signs of rotting prior to falling and was removed later Monday. There were no injuries to any people.

Molly Poppe, a spokeswoman for the city's Department of Streets and Sanitation, said Tuesday that the tree, an ash, was removed Monday along with 60 other damaged trees.

"All were removed in response to public safety after severe weather," Poppe said.

According to city records, the ash tree, age unknown, was treated within the last couple of years for Emerald Ash borer inoculation and would not have been given the injection if it had already been infected beyond recovery.

"We had no residential requests for removing that tree until [Monday]. We also trimmed it in 2004 and 2008," Poppe said.

When asked why that tree fell as compared to others on the same block, Poppe said, "There is no rhyme or reason as to why one falls and another doesn't."
