EDGEWATER — The Edgewater Farmers Market will kick-off its 25th year this Saturday with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at its new digs, the Broadway Armory parking lot at 5917 N. Broadway St.

Traditionally held at the intersection of Broadway and Norwood — at the former site of True Nature Foods — the decision to move the market was largely guided by the need for increased space and visibility along North Broadway, said Ally Brisbin, marketing and events coordinator with the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce.

Although the old location was directly across from where Whole Foods now sits, the move was not out of a fear of competition with the grocery chain, Brisbin said.

"The new draw of Whole Foods brings people in from other parts of the city, so people coming from the south, they're going to drive past the farmers market and hopefully stop into the farmers market first," she said. "Of course we hope they also go to Whole Foods, but I think the [new location] is a benefit, I'm really excited about it."

Brisbin said her team and Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) considered whether Whole Foods shoppers would cross the street and continue shopping at the farmers market, but settled on the new spot anyway.

"Really, I think moving it to the armory is the right decision, because it's just way more visible," Brisbin said. "And I think the feeling of it is going to be a lot better because it's going to feel cozier."

One of the newest attractions this year will be the addition of a Maker's Table, where each week a new vendor will showcase handmade items like baked goods, jewelry, homemade beauty products, art and more, Brisbin said.

Metropolis Coffee Company will be on hand as residents peruse the local produce. Brisbin said live music and a face painting tent will also be part of this year's family-friendly market.

The Edgewater Farmers Market will run every Saturday 8 a.m.-1 p.m. from June 13 until October 17.
