WICKER PARK —  A string of photography galleries that started in France and expanded to other European countries and Canada will be opening its fifth U.S. outpost on Damen Avenue, along a tony shopping stretch that both Wicker Park and Bucktown lay claim to.

"I consider this to be in the Bucktown end of Wicker Park," said Anthony Francioli, a curator for YellowKorner, which will open this fall at 1721 N. Damen Ave.

On Monday, Francioli said he signed a five-year-lease on the former Cafe Creme storefront. Before the short-lived French cafe, the spot was home to longtime staple Caffe De Luca, an Italian restaurant that closed in 2012.

Established in 2006, YellowKorner seeks "to introduce the greatest photographers from all over the world and to increase the number of copies of their work to make it accessible to as many collectors as possible," according to its website.

YellowKorner's other U.S. galleries are in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Newport Beach, Calif., and a mall in Short Hills, N.J.

YellowKorner draws its talent from an evolving pool of 150 photographers, including Formento - Formento, a husband-and-wife collaboration of BJ and Richeille Formento, Romina Ressia and Slim Aarons.

Prints, which have a focus on fashion, architecture and nature, will start at around $100 and run as high as a few thousand dollars, Francioli said.

Originally from Switzerland, Francioli has lived in Wicker Park on and off for 10 years.

Francioli said the neighborhood was selected for YellowKorner's first Midwest gallery because of its artistic vibe and foot traffic, especially with a nearby entrance to The 606's Bloomingdale Trail less than one block north, in Churchill Park.

"We want to democratize art, make it accessible," Francioli said, adding that the area reminds him of Le Marais, a historic Paris neighborhood packed with shops, galleries and new concept stores.
