CHICAGO — A 16-year-old boy was charged Friday with shooting a 7-year-old boy in Morgan Park Wednesday, police said.

The teenager was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, police said in a statement.

Around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, the 7-year-old was walking in the 1300 block of West 109th Place when he was shot in his shoulder. The boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition, police said.

According to witnesses, the boy is known in the neighborhood as Elija, a spry, short 7-year-old who moved into the area with his family about a year ago.

After Elija was shot, a neighbor picked him up, put him in her car and drove him 1½ blocks to the house of a close family friend, according to that family friend who asked not to be named.

The 16-year-old boy was taken into custody after he was identified as the shooter, police said.
