CHICAGO — A man wanted for armed robbery was shot by a Chicago Police officer after he charged the officer and the officer's gun went off accidentally in Canaryville early Friday, police said.

Around 3:15 a.m., officers were flagged down by a victim who had been robbed on Cermak Road and State Street in the South Loop, police said in a statement. The victim's cellphone was taken by three men who then drove away, police said.

The men were found in the vehicle in the 500 block of West 43rd Street in Canaryville. As one of the men got out of the car, an officer noticed a handgun in the man's waistband, police said.

The men then charged at an officer, hitting him with his body and causing the officer's gun to go off and shoot the man who charged him, police said.

Police union spokesman Pat Camden said the suspect elbowed the officer in the chest as he was getting out of the car. The robber was shot in his chest and dropped his gun as he ran away, Camden said.

He was found at Mercy Hospital and was later transferred to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, Camden said.

The two other men in the car were arrested and charges were pending, police said.
