NEAR WEST SIDE — A ministry dedicated to helping ex-cons turn their lives around is now offering help to seniors and neighbors with disabilities.

Under a new program, volunteers at St. Leonard's Ministries are offering help senior citizens and disabled residents living in the West Haven community who may need assistance with landscaping chores, light maintenance or shoveling sidewalks.

Seniors and disabled residents living within the boundaries of Lake Street, Monroe Street, Western Avenue and Damen Avenue can request help by contacting program coordinators John Stamps at 773-593-7211 or John Williams at 312-690-0191 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Priority will be based on the urgency and nature of the request, according to the 27th Ward office.

Earlier this week, volunteers from St. Leonard's helped clean up the neglected Wilma Ward Memorial Park.

St. Leonard's crews will continue to clean the park once every other week.

The ministry, located at 2100 W. Warren Blvd. on the Near West Side, has helped people recently released from prison since 1954.
