ENGLEWOOD — On Mother's Day Weekend, a group of moms will celebrate peace, hope, love and unity.

Last year, the EarthHeart Foundation started a Mother's Day Peace Celebration, and the organization on May 9 will visit a peace mural at the viaduct at 63rd and Wallace streets.

The group first will meet at New Beginnings Church, 6620 S. King Dr., at 12:30 p.m., where the event will kick off with complimentary Mother's Day portraits. Awards will be given to those who have helped with peace-building in their community.

Entertainment will be provided by the Chicago Children’s Choir, For Children By Children and The Happiness Club.

At 3 p.m., the group will march to the peace mural, a combined effort of EarthHeart and the Green Star Movement. The mural was created at the viaduct, a site of violence and death, by youths to celebrate peace, hope, love and unity.

For the last two years, EarthHeart has brought together hundreds from the Englewood and Woodlawn communities to celebrate and renew the vow of the women who originated Mother's Day in 1908 — the ending of war and violence.

“Mothers are a critical, yet undervalued force of change,” said Dede Koldyke, president of EarthHeart Foundation. “We can’t rely on anyone else. So we connect, talk and tap into viable solutions to the challenges of our neighborhoods.”
