Take a Sneak Peek at Edison Park Playground That Would Celebrate The Hawks

EDISON PARK — The playground at Edison Park's namesake park would be transformed into a black-and-red shrine to the Chicago Blackhawks, according to designs from the Edison Park Chamber of Commerce.

The main play structure would be adorned with the team's famous Indianhead logo, and each entrance would be hockey-themed, according to the plans.

The playground at 6755 N. Northwest Hwy. would also feature a swing set and a triangle-climbing bridge, according to the plans.

The chamber is working to raise $100,000 to transform the rotted, rusted, drab and dangerous playlot in into a state-of-the-art playground by the Chicago Park District through the Chicago Plays program, but Edison Park Chamber of Commerce officials want to make it a one-of-a-kind playground and honor Blackhawks CEO John McDonough, an Edison Park native.

Heather Cherone discusses the work still ahead for the park:

In 2012, Chicago Park District officials shot down a plan to renovate the park and name it after McDonough, citing a policy that prohibits parks and playgrounds from being named after people until at least a year after they die.

While the Chicago Plays program will contribute $125,000 in new equipment, a fundraising campaign hopes to raise another $100,000, officials said.

The playlot was last renovated in 1984, and is typically empty despite its location in the heart of the business district.
