CHICAGO — A man was fatally shot by police Friday night in South Shore, officials said.

Around 10:10 p.m., officers on patrol heard shots in the 7100 block of South Paxton Avenue, police said in a statement.

When officers arrived, they saw a van driving away. During a pursuit, a passenger exited the van and began to run before pointing a gun at the officers. The officers fired shots, fatally striking the man, police said.

The man was later identified as 18-year-old Jeffery Kemp, of the 7400 block of South Jeffery Boulevard, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, and no officers were injured, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.
