SOUTH SIDE — Incumbant Ald. John Pope is trailing challenger Susan Sadlowski Garza  by 89 votes in the 10th Ward, according to a count released Wednesday evening.

Garza had 5,747 votes, or 50.4 percent, while Pope had 49.6 percent, or 5,658 votes, according to the Board of Election Commissioners.

The new results include a tally of the 11th precinct, which wasn't counted on election night. Garza won that precinct, 275 to 193.

Although the vote total includes all precincts, absentee and provisional ballots were yet to be tabulated. Those votes won't be added until April 23.

In the municipal election held on Feb. 24, 342 votes were cast in the 11th precinct bordered by Avenue O, Ewing Avenue, 105th Street and 109th Street.

On Feb. 24, Pope — whose office is in the middle of the precinct at 3522 E. 106th St. in East Side — carried the 11th precinct with 132 votes, or 38.6 percent. But Garza was not far behind with 109 votes, or 31.8 percent.

"We have faith that this is definitely going to roll our way," Garza said earlier. "Just look at where we've come from."

Wednesday evening, Pope's campaign issued a statement, saying, "We remain committed to ensuring that ALL the votes are counted and we remain confident that the Alderman will be re-elected."

Election officials have until April 23 to collect and announce all final votes.
