RIVER WEST — After violently robbing a River West convenience store early Friday morning, four assailants fled the scene, leading police on chase before two were apprehended.

At about 2:54 a.m. Friday, Chicago Police officers patrolling the River West neighborhood observed a robbery in progress at the new 7-Eleven, 504 N. Halsted St., according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman. After demanding money, the suspects pistol-whipped one store clerk and cut another, police said. According to a source, the second victim was cut with a box cutter.

Leaving the injured victims, the four assailants headed west, fleeing the scene in a vehicle. At around Grand and Cicero avenues, about five miles northwest from the robbery site, the assailants exited the vehicle, fleeing on foot.

After a short foot chase, police apprehended and arrested a man and woman, but two assailants are still at large, Estrada said. Police could not provide descriptions of the assailants Friday morning.

The two male victims are in stable condition, Estrada said. The man who was hit in the face with the butt of gun was transported to Stroger Hospital and the man who sustained a cut to his hand was treated on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, police said, and the arrested individuals have not yet been charged.
