Woman Dies After Being Struck by Car, Charges Pending, Police Say

CHICAGO — A  woman died after being hit by driver in Englewood Thursday, police said.

In Englewood at 1:45 p.m., the 22-year-old was crossing the street  at West 61st and South Halsted Street when she was hit by a Mercury Sedan heading North on Halsted Street, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago police spokesman.

The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, Sedevic said.

The 69-year-old driver failed to stop until he reached 53rd and Union, Sedevic said.

He was taken into custody, and charges are pending, Sedevic said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the woman as Jazzalyn Fontanez, of the 1700 block of North Campbell Avenue. Fontanez was pronounced shorty before 7 p.m.

According to ABC 7, Fontanez was pregnant and had a five-year-old son.
