ROSELAND — As winter loosened its grip and temperatures rose Monday, gun violence erupted around the city, with nine people shot, including two men fatally. A 2-year-old boy and 5-year-old boy were injured by gunfire in Roseland.

The 2-year-old boy was being put into a car by a 34-year-old woman Monday night when they were shot in the 200 block of West 105th Street in Roseland, police said. The woman was hit in her chest and her left hand, and the boy was hit in his shoulder, police said.

When police arrived, they also discovered a 5-year-old boy and a 77-year-old man had been wounded in a nearby home.

The man had been shot in his head, and he later died. The boy had been grazed in his arm, and he lived.

The 77-year-old man was identified as Odell Branch, of the same block. He was pronounced dead at Christ Hospital at 7:41 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said the boy and man were in a home "when shots penetrated a window, and they were struck."

The injured children are the great-grandchildren of the slain 77-year-old, according to the Sun-Times. The wounded woman was his granddaughter. The man was watching TV with his great-grandson when they were shot through the window, the Sun-Times reported.

In a statement, police said the shooting appeared to be gang-related and "multiple persons of interest" were in custody and being questioned.

The shootings of the four in Roseland were part of a violent day that also saw a man fatally shot in Uptown shortly before 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, in West Englewood at 6:30 p.m., two men, an 18- and 19-year-old, were sitting in a parked car in the 7000 block of South Honore Street, when another car drove by and fired shots, police said.

Both men were shot in their legs and taken to St. Bernard Hospital where their conditions had stabilized, police said.

In Back of the Yards at 4:30 p.m., a 22-year-old man was standing in the alley of the 4900 block of South Wood Street when an occupant in a passing vehicle fired shots, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The man was shot in his left arm and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, Zala said.

According to police, the man is a gang member.

Earlier Monday, at 10:30 a.m. in Fuller Park, a 22-year-old man was standing in an alley, in the 300 block of West 42nd Street, when someone shot him in his abdomen and arm, police said.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, police said.
