'Vikings' Exhibit To Seize Field Museum on Friday

MUSEUM CAMPUS — Viking treasures are coming ashore on the coast of Lake Michigan.

"Vikings," a traveling exhibit about the storied Scandinavian warriors, opens Friday at the Field Museum, 1400 S. Lake Shore Drive.

The museum is the first, and perhaps only, U.S. stop for the exhibit organized by the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm. "Vikings" aims to dispel popular misconceptions about Viking culture and show visitors how the legendary Norse people actually lived.

"This is such a great opportunity to collect content and culture we don't usually feature," Field Museum Exhibitions Project Manager Susan Neill said earlier this month.

The exhibit will feature nearly 500 Viking artifacts, including a replica krampmacken, or 27-foot-long Viking ship, parked on the museum's south steps. Guests will be able to excavate a virtual boat grave, play an early Scandinavian board game, and wield a replica Viking sword.

"No one thing defined the Vikings, and research continues to teach us how nuanced these northern people were," a news release from the museum stated.

The exhibit runs through Oct. 4. Tickets are included in both Discovery and All Access passes to the museum. Visit the Field's website for more information.
