CHICAGO — Cook County Jail is looking to use a new video-style visitation system, the Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.
The Sheriff's Office and the office of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle are working on a home-based visitation technology that would allow families and friends to visit inmates remotely via computers.
The new technology aims to increase communication between inmates and their family, reduce wait times for on-site visits and reduce overtime for correctional officers at the jail, the Sheriff's Office said.
But even with the new system, on-site visitations would not be eliminated.
The Sheriff's Office is asking family members of inmates to participate in a survey to evaluate public opinion on the proposed visitation technology.
Anyone wishing to participate in the toll-free survey is asked to call 855-849-6521.
