CHICAGO — Bundle up for bitter cold, Chicago.

Temperatures in the city will drop to record lows overnight Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday highs will be 5 to 9 degrees with a wind chill of 10 to 20. Wind gusts could get up to 30 mph. Wednesday night lows will be 5 to 9 below zero, with a wind chill of 20 to 30 below zero. Winds will slow to 10 to 20 mph, said National Weather Service meteorologist Charles Mott.

The overnight low will approach the record low set in 1936 of 7 below zero, said Steven Rodriguez, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Scattered flurries are expected all day Wednesday, but no accumulation is expected, Rodriguez said.

Early Thursday, the cold will stick around, with highs expected at 2 to 6 degrees and a wind chill of 20 to 30 below.

Though Thursday night will be cold, the weather will warm into Friday, when a "heat wave" of highs of 17 to 21 are expected, Mott said.
