WICKER PARK — A Ramen shop opening next Wednesday will be giving away bowls of free Ramen to the first 100 people that walk into the door on its opening night.

Set to open at 5 p.m. Feb 18, Furious Spoon is just south of the Milwaukee, Damen and North avenues intersection, inside the former Food Mart in the Flat Iron building, 1571 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Ramen originated in China but has been adapted over the years as a Japanese dish, with many variations of broths and noodles.

Though there are a smattering of ramen shops in other Chicago neighborhoods, Wicker Park has only one dedicated ramen eatery, Oiistar, which opened in December 2012 at 1385 N. Milwaukee Ave.

For those familiar with Food Mart or any of the past restaurants in the same storefront, the 1,300-square-foot interior of Furious Spoon looks very different.

With space for about 50 people, the eatery has an open kitchen where patrons can watch their food being cooked, either while sitting a long communal tables or on a long, low backless bench facing the kitchen.

In addition to four varieties of ramen (vegetable, pork, chicken and a rotating special) all priced around $8, Furious Spoon will serve rice dishes and a few appetizers like pickled vegetables and gyoza, Japanese dumplings.

There will also be a a small selection of Japanese beers and sake too.

Furious Spoon, 1571 N. Milwaukee Ave.. Hours are 11 a.m.-2 a.m. daily. Follow Furious Spoon on Twitter, @Furious_Spoon or Facebook.
