CHICAGO — Green Line riders in the South Loop finally have a stop of their own.

The long-awaited Cermak-McCormick Place station opened Sunday morning after more than a year-and-a-half of construction that disrupted Green Line service on a weekly basis. The $50 million station is located at State Street and Cermak Road, a quarter-mile walk from the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line station.

It's the first "L" station at that location since 1977, the CTA said, filling a gap that has existed since the previous station was demolished.

The station was originally slated to open at the end of 2014, and is located between the 35th Street-Bronzeville-IIT stop to the south and Roosevelt to the north. It is handicapped-accessible.

“The new Cermak-McCormick Place station will offer a convenient transit option for commuters, residents, employees and visitors, and at the same time help support economic development well under way in the community,” said CTA President Forrest Claypool in a statement when the project was announced in August 2013.
