CANARYVILLLE — Out with a Streets and Sanitation truck to check on the progress of snow removal after the recent blizzard, Ald. Jim Balcer (11th) saw something shocking.

A private snow plow clipped a Canaryville man at 46th Street and Wallace Avenue, leaving him laying in the snow and writhing in pain.

Acting quickly, the veteran alderman called 911 to report the incident.

Audio of the 911 call:

The victim, 51-year-old Daniel Lewis, broke his ankle in three places, according to ABC7, which first reported the story Thursday.

"I could see he was in immense pain. I could see his leg was broken or at least his ankle was, the way it was twisted," Balcer said. "I kept telling [the victim] everything will be fine. We wrapped him in a blanket."

Lewis told ABC7 he was knocked to the ground and looked up to see "all these guys there and Alderman Balcer's there."

Balcer said even though he's the one who called 911, the credit belongs to the city's firemen and police, who were "there in a matter of minutes."
