PORTAGE PARK — The Oscar-nominated documentary that details the life and work of Vivian Maier will be shown for free at the Patio Theater.

"Finding Vivian Maier," which is up for the Oscar for best documentary, will be shown for free at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Patio Theater, 6008 W. Irving Park Road.

A street photographer, Maier, who died unknown in 2009, is now regarded by many as one of America's greatest photographers of the 20th century.

The documentary was directed by Charlie Siskel and John Maloof.

In 2007, Maloof found a cache of Maier's photos and negatives at RPN Auction House, 4451 N. Milwaukee Ave., while working on a book about Portage Park with Dan Pogorzelski. That started Maloof on a yearslong effort to catalog, preserve and display Maier's work.

"This is like giving back to the community because this is where it all started," Pogorzelski said.

Before the screening, co-sponsored by the Northwest Chicago Historical Society, Maloof will be honored by state Rep. Robert Martwick, D-Jefferson Park, for his role in rediscovering Maier's work.
