NEAR WEST SIDE — The two candidates seeking to represent the 27th Ward will square off in a debate Thursday night.

Veteran Ald. Walter Burnett Jr. and challenger Gabe Beukinga will both participate in the 27th Ward debate sponsored by the West Side NAACP. The debate will start at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Old St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 531 N. Kedzie St.

Despite an objection against his petitions, the Chicago Board of Elections decided Monday that 31-year-old Beukinga should appear on the ballot.

Burnett, 51, is seeking his sixth term.

The diverse 27th Ward includes parts of the West Loop, Greektown, Garfield Park, the Near North Side, Old Town, West Humboldt Park, West Town, the Medical District and Goose Island neighborhoods.

The election is Feb. 24.
