CHICAGO — Chicago's deep freeze continued with below-zero temperatures Thursday morning, and temperatures later in the day only expected to reach as high as 13 degrees.

Snow is possible before noon Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, though if it snows total accumulation should be below an inch. Strong southwest winds, which could reach up to 40 mph, will cause the wind chill to reach about minus 26 degrees, according to the weather service.

The CTA reported some Red Line and Blue Line trains were delayed Thursday morning.

Thursday night, temperatures will hover just above zero with an 80 percent chance of precipitation. Scattered snowfall is expected along with blowing snow. Friday should be a bit sunnier with temperatures standing steady around minus 3 degrees, according to the weather service.

The cold weather caused CPS to cancel school for the second consecutive day, saying late Wednesday that the below-zero wind chills forecasted for Thursday were again too dangerous for students. Temps never reached higher than 2 degrees Wednesday.

“Our top priority remains the safety of our students, and tomorrow’s weather conditions could again be dangerous to students traveling to and from school,” said CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett. “It is in the best interest of our students to cancel classes tomorrow, and we look forward to welcoming back all of our students once weather conditions improve.”

On Thursday, CPS buildings will remain open for students that show up at school. CPS administrative staff, building engineers and custodians will be there, but not teachers or other staff.

CPS said classes should resume Friday.
