COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Austin carjacker was arrested this week after he told a victim he'd sell her stolen car back to her for $50, prosecutors said.

Jereh Brown, 24, made plans to meet the woman Monday night, but was greeted by police, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said in court Wednesday.

Brown was charged with vehicular hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle after he stole a 1998 Chevy Malibu late last month, court records show.

On Dec. 26, the day the woman's Malibu was carjacked, Brown was picked up in the car by a friend of the woman, Antonietti said. Brown sat in the passenger seat, Antonietti said.

When the pair stopped in the 5800 block of West Arthington Street, Brown walked over to the driver's side and tried to take the car, Antonietti said. The woman put up a fight and honked the horn, but Brown prevailed and drove off.

On Monday, Brown called the car's owner, a 19-year-old Forest Park woman, and told her she could buy back her car for $50. The pair agreed to meet in the 600 block of North Parkside Avenue, and the woman called police.

Officers found Brown hiding in a closet in a home on the street shortly before 10 p.m., court records show. A key to the car was in the home.

After a brief bond hearing Wednesday, Brown was released on electronic monitoring.
