NORTH CENTER — Aldi will unveil plans to replace its existing store on Montrose Avenue with a new eco-friendly building at a community meeting set for Thursday.
Expected features of the new store include a green roof with solar panels and permeable pavers in the parking lot to help absorb stormwater, according to Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th), who shared the news of Aldi's intentions in his weekly newsletter to constituents.
According to the alderman, the revamped Aldi's, to be constructed in the footprint of its current structure at 2431 W. Montrose Ave., will also stock some organic items.
Aldi purchased adjacent land to the east and west to accommodate added parking for the new store, which, at 15,000 square feet, will be larger than the current 12,000 square feet.
While no zoning change is required — meaning no aldermanic or community approval is necessary for the project to move forward — Aldi's agreed to share its plan with neighbors at a forum schedule for 7 p.m., Thursday, at Kindred Hospital, 2544 W. Montrose, sixth floor.

Founded in Germany, Aldi operates more than 9,000 stores worldwide, including more than a dozen in Chicago, and is the owner of Trader Joe's.
