CHICAGO — If you've been dreaming of a white Christmas you might get more than you bargained for.

The National Weather Service is warning residents around Chicago of a powerful storm that could bring heavy snow into the Midwest. Though the exact path of the system is still unconfirmed, Chicago could be hit with several inches of snow Wednesday.

If the storm hits Chicago it will begin as rain early Christmas Eve and change to snow by the late afternoon. The storm should be over by the early evening, said Charles Mott, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

Veteran traffic reporter Bart Shore discusses holiday travel when winter weather strikes:

Snowfall could be as heavy as 1-2 inches per hour, and some areas could see 3-6 inches, Mott said.

The storm could include thunder and lightning, Mott said.

If the storm hits, "It won't be here long, but the time it's around will not be nice," Mott said.

Temperatures could reach as high as 38 degrees or as low as 31 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Those planning to travel Wednesday night should check forecasts before leaving their homes, the weather service warned.
