MORGAN PARK — The Beverly Arts Center will host a three-day student film festival from Jan. 16-18.
Students from elementary school through college will have the opportunity to screen their in-progress and completed works as part of the festival at 2407 W. 111th St. in Morgan Park.
Filmmakers will be given feedback and an opportunity to learn more about filmmaking through a variety of lectures and hands-on sessions.
Filmmaker Jonathan Moeller organized the event. He's also the coordinator of film programming at the Beverly Art Center and manages the BACinema Wednesday night film series.
Moeller and several colleagues will be on hand to help students. Their breakout sessions are open to the public and will be cover a variety of topics including screenwriting, how to take advantage of the festival circuit, making the most of your budget, make up, stop animation and more.
The students screening their work will also converge in panels to discuss directing, genre filmmaking and other aspects of the creative process.
Cash prizes totaling $1,750 will be awarded in several categories, and three "Audience Choice" awards will be given. These winners will be able to use their prize money for school or film costs.
Selected films also will get further exposure throughout the year as part of weekly screenings in the BACinema program, which shows movies and short films in the art center's 400-seat theater.
A daily pass to the festival costs $6, or $5 for Beverly Arts Centers members. Admission is free for students with valid identification. A weekend pass costs $15, or $14 for members. All breakout sessions are included in the admission fee.
