CHICAGO — Several people, including a known gang member, were taken into custody Monday morning after a North Side barricade situation, officials said.

The situation began at 2:40 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Sherwin Avenue when a man barricaded himself inside the apartment, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

When police were able to enter the "vacant unit" where the suspect was holed up, he and several other people were taken into custody without incident, Sedevic said.

Charges are pending and no other information was available, she said.

Ald. Joe Moore (49th) said police were serving a warrant for a "known gang member" when the standoff began.

By 8:30 a.m., most of the police response, which included armored vehicles and a SWAT team, had been cleared.

Warming buses were also on the scene Monday morning.

Loyola University student James Honeycutt, 31, said he awoke to helicopters and police outside his apartment on Sherwin.

"My cat was freaking out because of the helicopters," he said.

Honeycutt said his plans to begin his drive back home to North Carolina were delayed because his car was parked outside the building where the suspects had been barricaded.
