CHICAGO — A spate of violence erupted on the South and West sides in a 30-minute period Friday afternoon when one man was shot dead and four others wounded in separate incidents.

The homicide occurred in the 3000 block of South Kedvale in Little Village about 4:35 p.m., said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman. A 19-year-old man was shot in the chest. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where he later died, he said.

Preliminary information indicated the man was walking on the street when someone approached him and fired shots, police said.

The victim was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Johnny Coria. An autopsy determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Two men were shot in West Pullman about 4:55, Sweeney said. They were sitting in a vehicle in the 11800 block of South Lowe Avenue when someone came up to them and fired shots. A 25-year-old man was shot in the lower back, and a 22-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, he said.

The were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where their conditions had stabilized, Sweeney said.

In Brainerd, a 30-year-old man was shot in the leg while in the 9500 block of South Halsted Street at 5:07 p.m., Sweeney said. He was taken to Christ, where his condition had stabilized. Police believe the man was shot during a robbery, but had no more information.

At 5:08, in the 8200 block of South Saginaw Avenue, in South Chicago, a 24-year-old man was shot, Sweeney said. He did not know where the man was shot, or where he was taken for treatment, but said the man's condition had stabilized.

Earlier Friday, four men were shot in separate incidents on the South Side.

Later, at 6:23 p.m., someone shot a 35-year-old man in the 5700 block of South Sangamon Street in Englewood, striking him in his ankle, police said.

The man took himself to St. Bernard Hospital. His condition is unknown, police said.
