MERCHANDISE MART — The city hopes a new map will make Chicago drivers' lives easier when it comes to parking their cars.

An interactive map detailing the city's 1,429 residential parking zones — and the restrictions that come with them — was unveiled Thursday.

The map replaces what the City Clerk's Office calls a "zone table," a 90-page book that details parking restrictions in the city's residential areas.

Patrick Corcoran, a spokesman for the City Clerk's Office, said the new interactive map could be used to make parking rules simpler across the city in the future, as well as help people make decisions about where to live.

About 20 percent of the city's residential area falls into a parking zone, according to the clerk's office. In all, 8,004 different blocks can have their own parking rules.

The clerk's office acknowledged that there would be some inaccuracies in the initial map and ask anyone who notices issues to email Clerk.ZoneParking@cityofchicago.org.
