EDGEWATER — The future home of Pearl's Southern Comfort on North Broadway is taking shape.

After a major renovation — which included digging a basement and tearing everything out of a nearly 100-year-old building except for three walls — the southern-cuisine and barbecue eatery should open in March, said owner Danny Beck.

Beck said zoning changes and construction hiccups delayed the restaurant and bar's opening, but workers just completed the first-floor bar using reclaimed wood, a sign of progress.

The restaurant's second bar, on the rooftop patio, was under construction Wednesday at 5352 N. Broadway.

Beck says the wait will be worth it.

"We definitely want it to be a place you can pop in and get a quick drink" in the neighborhood, he said.

He said the menu would include a Tex-Mex and Louisiana flair. Barbecue will also be a part of the menu and a smoker would be installed in the kitchen. The bar when complete will feature cocktails and 16 draft beers.

Brunch also would be a big focus, he said.

The main dining room would include 80 seats, while the rooftop patio would have seats with a view of the "L" tracks to the east across North Broadway.

The facade of the bar will be glass windows that open to the street.

Beck said his longtime manager at his other establishment, Toons Bar & Grill, partnered with him to open Pearl's.

Behind the patio area on the roof, Beck built a two-bed, two-bath apartment he intends to rent when completed.

Beck said tastings at Pearl's should be held in February.
