CHICAGO — A 17-year-old was killed in a shooting in Chicago Lawn early Wednesday, police said.

Around 1:15 a.m., officers were called to the 5900 block of South Fairfield Avenue where they found the boy lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound in his head, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The teen was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in critical condition but he eventually succumbed to his injuries, Sedevic said.

The teen was identified as Jose Hernandez, who lived on the block where the shooting occurred. He was pronounced dead at 3:14 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
