ALBANY PARK — Since the concept was announced in November 2013 for The Nighthawk — a combination coffee shop/bar across from the Kimball Brown Line station — residents have been eyeing the location, awaiting news of an opening date.

Owners provided word of their progress via social media over the weekend, and the short answer was The Nighthawk was still "coming soon."

A promised "Fall 2014" debut came and went, owners explained on Facebook, due to the building at 4744 N. Kimball Ave. requiring more extensive renovations than anticipated.

After demolishing the interior in late summer "we realized we would need to make substantially more changes to this place" than they had originally planned, the Facebook post stated.

"We are just finishing up city permitting requirements with our architect and contractor and plan to continue working on the build out of the space as soon as the permitting process is complete," the note continued.

Neighbors responded with messages of encouragement.

"This stuff always takes forever," said one comment. "The neighborhood will be cheering you on and eagerly awaiting the opening!"

"Your presence will help this neighborhood," said another resident. "I'm here to support you guys in any way I can."

The Nighthawk owners, Howard Windmiller and Brendan Phillips, could not be reached for further comment.

Their plan, as presented at a meeting of Albany Park Neighbors last year, is for The Nighthawk to open at 6 a.m. daily, offering an array of coffees and pastries provided by local bakeries. In the early evening, The Nighthawk would transition to a bar, serving craft beers and classic cocktails as well as coffee.

At the time, the business partners stated the building "had no TLC" and a "full gut rehab" was needed.
