CHICAGO — The City Council approved a $2.4 million plan to acquire land and build a 100-car parking lot for teachers at Lindblom Math & Science Academy in Englewood.

The new parking lot in the 6100 block of South Winchester Avenue, between the school and Lindblom Park, which is used in its athletic programs, would increase the "safety and security of the staff" that currently parks cars a few blocks away from Lindblom, according to Public Building Commission spokeswoman Molly Sullivan.

The $2.4 million would be paid through TIF funds and would largely cover the acquisition of properties.

That process has already begun, as property owners have already received legal documents about the negotiation process. Several of the relevant lots are already owned by the city.

Pending the acquisition process, Sullivan said the new parking lot will be opening next fall.
