CHICAGO — A 16-year-old boy was fatally wounded in a shooting in South Austin Wednesday night.

The teen was walking in the 600 block of North Mayfield Avenue about 9:30 p.m. when someone hopped out of a van and shot him in the head, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Demond Avant, of the 1000 block of North Monitor Avenue, was taken to West Suburban Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

No one is in custody for the shooting, police said.
