LITTLE ITALY — As part of the neighborhood's Christmas Festa celebration, an artisan gift market and tree lighting ceremony is planned in Little Italy this weekend.

The artisan gift market, at the University Village Association offices, 1453 W. Taylor St., will be open 3-7 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

At the market, shoppers can pick up handcrafted gifts from Little Italy stores and artisans, including jewelry, greeting cards, soap, pottery, children's aprons, spices, wine bottle decor, local history books and more. Some market vendors only accept cash.

On Sunday, a tree lighting ceremony and toy drive is planned from noon to 3 p.m. at Piazza DiMaggio at Taylor and Bishop streets. The event will include hot drinks, roasted chestnuts and music, and the tree will be lit at 12:30 p.m.

Neighbors planning to give to the toy drive are asked to bring new unwrapped toys. The gifts will be donated to Holy Family Church, 1080 W. Roosevelt Road.

The UVA will also provide holiday cards for neighbors to send one to a U.S. military veteran. The cards will be brought to the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, 820 S. Damen Ave.
