CHICAGO — It's every air traveler's nightmare: Get to the airport, perhaps not as early as you'd like, only to see a security line, a very long security line.

That's the scene that greeted travelers at Midway Airport Sunday morning, one of the busiest travel days of the year. Photos posted on social media show the line snaking close to the entrance of the Midway Orange Line stop.

One traveler, Denise Whitaker, said she mapped the distance of the line, which came to 1.2 miles.

Aviation Department officials told the Sun-Times such backups occur from time to time, and the mess was clear by 9:15 a.m.

Good for those catching later flights, but not for Whitaker, who said she missed hers.
