CHICAGO — The driver of an SUV that backed into Lake Michigan Friday afternoon has died, authorities said.

The man was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Randy Brittman, 51. The Medical Examiner's Office did not know his address.

Authorities said Brittman drove his vehicle backwards into the lake from Lake Shore Drive near Balbo Drive.

After crossing Lake Shore Drive, he drove into the lake at a high speed, officials said. Resuce teams dove into the lake to save Brittman, who was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, said Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

Brittman was pronounced dead there at 8:23 p.m. Friday.
