CHICAGO — After shooting a security guard at a Bridgeport diner, robbers grabbed the cash register before fleeing, police said.

Around 3:10 a.m., two men — one armed and the other unarmed — entered Kevin's Hamburger Heaven, 554 W. Pershing Road, and tried to rob the 24-hour burger joint, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

A security guard confronted the duo and a fight broke out. During the struggle, the security guard was grazed in his buttocks. The 36-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, Estrada said.

After shooting the man, the thieves grabbed the cash register, which contained an unknown amount of money, got in a vehicle and drove off, Estrada said.

No one is in custody for the shooting.

Friday’s shooting is the second time gunfire has erupted at the 24-hour greasy spoon in less than two years.

In April 2013, three men were shot — two fatally  — in what a former top cop called a gang-related "crime of opportunity and potentially a hit.”

Peter Joseph and Allen Smiley, both of the 8100 block of South Burnham Avenue, were killed outside the restaurant. A third man was shot in the arm and survived.
